Do Bed Bugs Smell?

When a bed bug infestation is present, the most obvious signs are visual—seeing physical bugs on your bed or another surface. However, there may be another sign that is not considered as often: the smell of bed bugs.

Do bed bugs smell?

Many bugs emit odors called alarm pheromones, and bed bugs are one of them. If a large group of bed bugs is disturbed, such as when someone plops themselves on a bed that they have made their home, they may emit these pheromones. Bed bug odors can also come from fecal matter.

What do bed bugs smell like?

Interestingly, bed bugs can smell different to different people. Many people report smelling coriander, but another common description is the scent of spoiled raspberries. Others report a strong acidic scent or that of almonds or marzipan. If you notice an unusual smell in an otherwise clean room, it may be time to call in a professional. If you do not smell anything, don’t be concerned, as not everyone can detect an infestation through scent.

Can my dog smell bed bugs?

Canine scent detection of bed bugs takes specialized training. However, when these canines have completed training, they are significantly better than human technicians at detecting the presence of bed bugs. Scent detection should always be handled by a trained professional.

Other Signs of Bed Bugs

Other signs of bed bugs may include:

  • Brown or black stains on bedding or fabrics
  • Bloodstains
  • Shed skins from molting

Many people first become aware of bed bugs when they receive bites, but this is not always a reliable sign. Many other pests, allergies, medications, allergic reactions and other irritants can cause reactions that look similar to bed bug bites.
