Like many localities across the country, Albemarle County is hardly immune from the nuisance of bed bugs. Many people do not consider themselves at risk for a bed bug infestation, but, the truth is, bed bugs do not discriminate and, if not monitored carefully, they can pose some serious health problems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), bed bugs have been known to cause health issues ranging from allergic reactions to skin infections. If this is concerns you, know that Charlottesville homeowners can take action against bed bugs by recognizing the signs of an infestation and having a plan  to resolve an infestation if one should occur.

What is a Bed Bug?

According to the EPA, bed bugs have three life cycles. The first stage is the egg, which is when the bugs are approximately the size of a pinhead and are pearl white in color. Second are young bed bugs known as nymphs. These are smaller and white-yellow in color; they are also translucent in appearance. Finally, the bed bugs become adults. At this stage, they are about 5-7 mm in size or roughly the size of an apple seed. They have flat and oval shaped bodies and are brown in color.

What are the Signs of Infestation?

Though bed bugs can be hard to spot with the naked eye, there are visible signs you can be on the lookout for in your home. When assessing your household, look for the following:

  • A rusty stain— caused by bed bugs being crushed.
  • Any small, pin-sized dark spots— could be signs of bed bug excrement.
  • Eggs that are pale yellow in color— could be caused by nymphs.

Additionally, bed bugs can be found hidden away in any of these locations in your home:

  • In the seams or cushions of couches
  • Curtain folds
  • Drawer joints
  • Under wall hangings
  • Under loose wallpaper
