For many homeowners, roaches are the last thing they wish to discover. When finding a cockroach, immediate action is required to prevent further damage and invasion. Roaches are attracted to the food available to them. They will eat almost anything, including paper, plastics, animal matter and fabrics. Below are some signs that it may be time to call in a pest professional.

Signs of Cockroaches

Unusual Smells

Established cockroach colonies can produce a lingering musty, oily and pungent smell that spreads to any items they come in contact with.

Cockroach Droppings

Cockroach droppings are small and cylindrical, and can create a fine black dust over time.

Smear Marks

Roaches will leave marks on horizontal surfaces, such as wall/floor junctions where they are most active.

Shed Skin

As roaches mature, they shed their nymphal skins about 5-8 times. These skins are often found where cockroaches seek shelter.

Live Roaches

German cockroaches seek out warmth and humidity, and are often found in bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchen areas. Sightings of these roaches are common when turning on lights in a dark room.

Where Do Cockroaches Live?

Cockroaches are great at hiding, and move quickly, so they can be difficult to spot. Here are some of their favorite hiding places.

  • Bathrooms
    • Backs of cabinets – Here, roaches are able to feed on soap residue, tissues and toilet paper
    • Behind sinks, bathtubs and toilets – These spaces provide shelter and easy access to water.
  • Kitchens
    • Cabinets and pantries – These are usually stocked with food and provide shelter.
    • Appliances – Ovens and refrigerators provide warmth and shelter, along with easy access to food.
  • Laundry Rooms
    • Washers and dryers – Roaches love hiding near the heat put off by these appliances.
    • Cabinets – These can contain moisture and detergent, which roaches will eat.
  • Basements
    • Walls – Unfinished basements often have small holes in the walls that provide easy entry for roaches.
    • Baseboards – Roaches find it easy to hide in any small cracks or gaps in baseboards
  • Drains
    • Roaches can fit through the smallest of spaces, so damaged drain covers can become a big problem.
